Cross cultural differences in matters such as language, etiquette, non-verbal communication, norms and values can, do and will lead to cross cultural blunders. Cross cultural blunders that could have been avoided with appropriate cross cultural awareness training are as following: 1. Locum is a Swedish company. As most companies do at Christmas they sent out Christmas cards to customers. In 1991, they decided to give their logo a little holiday spirit by replacing the o in Locum with a heart. 2. The Japanese company Matsushita Electric was promoting a new Japanese PC for internet users. Panasonic created the new web browser and had received license to use the cartoon character Woody Woodpecker as an interactive internet guide. The day before the huge marketing campaign, Panasonic realized its error and pulled the plug. The ads for the new product featured the following slogan: Touch Woody The Internet Pecker. The company only realized its cross cultural blunder when an embarrassed American explained what Touch Woodys Pecker could be interpreted as! 3. The Swedish furniture giant IKEA somehow agreed upon the name FARTFULL for one of its new desks. 4. In the late 1970s, Wang, the American computer company could not understand why its British branches were refusing to use its latest motto Wang Cares. Of course, to British ears this sounds too close to Wankers which would not really give a very positive image to any company. 5. There are several examples of companies getting tangled up with bad translations of products due to the word mist. Irish Mist (an alcoholic drink), Mist Stick (a curling iron from Clairol) and Silver Mist (Rolls Royce car) all flopping as mist in German means dung/manure. Fancy a glass of Irish dung. 6. Traficante and Italian mineral water found a great reception in Spains underworld. In Spanish it translates as drug dealer. 7. In 2002, Umbro the UK sports manufacturer had to withdraw its new trainers (sneakers) called the Zyklon. The firm received complaints from many organizations and individuals as it was the name of the gas used by the Nazi regime to murder millions of Jews in concentration camps. 8. Sharwoods, a UK food manufacturer, spent  £6 million on a campaign to launch its new Bundh sauces. It received calls from numerous Punjabi speakers telling them that bundh sounded just like the Punjabi word for arse. 9. Honda introduced their new car Fitta into Nordic countries in 2001. If they had taken the time to undertake some cross cultural marketing research they may have discovered that Fitta was an old word used in vulgar language to refer to a womans genitals in Swedish, Norwegian and Danish. In the end they renamed it Honda Jazz. 10. A nice cross cultural example of the fact that all pictures or symbols are not interpreted the same across the world: staff at the African port of Stevadores saw the internationally recognized symbol for fragile (i.e. broken wine glass) and presumed it was a box of broken glass. Rather than waste space they threw all the boxes into the sea. 11. Pepsodent tried to sell its toothpaste in Southeast Asia by emphasizing that it whitens your teeth. They found out that the local natives chew betel nuts to blacken their teeth which they find attractive. 12. Bacardi concocted a fruity drink with the name Pavian to suggest French chic but Pavian means baboon in German. 13. In 1995, Nintendo has set the gaming world on fire with their new DS system, built entirely around its touch screen. A Korean company wanting to make a piece of dictionary software that takes advantage of the touch screen capabilities. Touch Dictionary just needed to shorten it up, to make it snappier, something cool that the kids will remember, hence â€Å"Touch Dic.† 14. The American Dairy Associations huge success with its campaign Got Milk? prompted them to expand advertising to Mexico. It was soon brought to their attention that the Spanish translation read Are you lactating? 15. When Gerber first started selling baby food in Africa, they used the same packaging as in the USA with a cute baby on the label. Later they found out that in Africa, companies routinely put pictures on the label of what is inside since many people cannot read! 16. A company advertised eyeglasses in Thailand by featuring a variety of cute animals wearing glasses. The ad was a poor choice since animals are considered to be a form of low life and no self respecting. Thai would wear anything worn by animals. 17. The soft drink Fresca was being promoted by a saleswoman in Mexico. She was surprised that her sales pitch was greeted with laughter, and later embarrassed when she learned that fresca is slang for lesbian. 18. A soft drink was introduced into Arab countries with an attractive label that had stars on itsix-pointed stars. The Arabs interpreted this as pro-Israeli and refused to buy it. Another label was printed in ten languages, one of which was Hebrewagain the Arabs did not buy it. In addition to interpersonal cross cultural gaffes, the translation of documents, brochures, advertisements and signs also offer some comical cross cultural blunders. 19. Kellogg had to rename its Bran Buds cereal in Sweden when it discovered that the name roughly translated to burned farmer. 20. When PepsiCo advertised Pepsi in Taiwan with the ad Come Alive With Pepsi they had no idea that it would be translated into Chinese as Pepsi brings your ancestors back from the dead. 21. American medical containers were distributed in Great Britain and caused quite a stir. The instructions to Take off top and push in bottom, innocuous to Americans, had very strong sexual connotations to the British. 22. In Italy, a campaign for Schweppes Tonic Water translated the name into Schweppes Toilet Water. 23. United Airlines unknowingly got off on the wrong foot during its initial flights from Hong Kong. To commemorate the occasion, they handed out white carnations to the passengers. When they learned that to many Asians white flowers represent bad luck and even death, they changed to red carnations 24. A famous drug company marketed a new remedy in the United Arab Emirates. To avoid any mistakes they used pictures. The first picture was of someone ill, the next picture showed the person taking the medication, the last picture showed them looking well. What they forgot is that in the Arab world people read from right to left! In conclusion, poor cross cultural awareness has many consequences, some serious others comical. This essay compares the differences and similarities in the way in which the tragedies develop in Macbeth and A View from the Bridge. Macbeth is a more intense tragedy, as innocent people die as a result of his madness, before he himself is killed. A View from the Bridge is a softer tragedy, dealing with two men who want the same lady. Straightaway, with such a high-powered storyline, Macbeth is going to be the more intense tragedy. The aim of a tragedy is to inspire a mix of emotions in the reader, where they have attachments to both sides, and to present an unfortunate sequence of events that cause an unfortunate ending. With so many more characters involved in Macbeth and a much longer sequence of events, it can be considered better at creating a mix of emotion in people, and thus might be considered the better tragedy. Both of the primary victims in Macbeth and A View from the Bridge performed a favour for the individual that murdered them, which adds to the tragedy. In Macbeth, Macbeth murders King Duncan in order to become king. King Duncan refers to Macbeth as his ‘worthiest kinsman’ and his ‘worthy Cawdor’ after he made Macbeth thane of Cawdor, which was a rank of nobility. Furthermore, upon staying within the Macbeth household, Duncan ‘granted many gifts’. He presented a diamond to Lady Macbeth for her ‘boundless hospitality’. This makes Duncan’s death evermore tragic and unjust, as he did not deserve to die. Similarly, in A View from the Bridge, Eddie offers two illegal immigrants a place to stay in his home while they find work, and insists he has to ‘buy a tablecloth’ to make his guests feel more welcome. Yes, Eddie’s relationship with Roldolpho sours, but his initial welcoming was an act of kindness. In both Macbeth and A View from the Bridge, the story started off well. During the development of the tragedies, Eddie went against advice from Alferi, which was to leave Catherine and Roldolpho to it. Had Eddie taken this advice, he would likely still be alive, so ignoring the advice lead to his demise. Contrarily, it can be argued that Macbeth took a lot of advice from Lady Macbeth and bended to her will. Macbeth was very uncertain about taking this advice, as he considered his loyalty to Duncan as his ‘kinsman and his subject’, and recognised that Duncan had his own noble qualities, as he ‘[h]ath borne his faculties so meek’. Had Macbeth not taken this advice and listened to himself, he would probably also still be alive. This is a difference in the development of the tragedies because both victims took opposite decisions, but ultimately ended up with the same fate. Macbeth was killed by Macduff, because previously Macbeth had murdered Lady Macduff and their children. Macbeth had not harmed Macduff himself, so he had not directly attacked the man who killed him, but the people who were close to him. Marco killed Eddie, though Eddie had not had problems with Marco, only Roldolpho. Thus, both characters were killed by people they had not directly attacked. This adds to the tragedy in both cases because it might cause the viewer to have some sympathy for the victim, or sympathy for the murderers who acted out of revenge in both cases. More sympathy might be afforded for Eddie than Macbeth, because the fate that Eddie got was not one he had inflicted on anyone else. While he lunged at Marco with a knife, it could have been that he was acting out of self-defence. However, Macbeth had ordered the deaths of absolutely innocent people. Lady Macduff, her children, Banquo and Duncan and the chamberlains, and had planned to kill other innocent people – Macduff and Fleance. Thus, in this case, it could be argued that Macbeth’s fate was a certain kind of karma. The same cannot be said for Eddie in A View from a Bridge, so this might cause the reader to have more sympathy for Eddie than more Macbeth. Macbeth focuses more on the depths of despair that its characters fall into more than A View from a Bridge. Lady Macbeth’s personal tragedy is explained, her blood-stained hands and her dreams and her eventual suicide may make the reader feel her tragedy as well as her husband’s. Duncan’s fall into the depths of despair are also poetically made apparent, through soliloquies and expressions such as ‘Will all Neptune’s great ocean wash this blood’, which is the expression of Duncan’s blood on his hands that haunts Macbeth throughout the play. The reader isn’t given the same insight into the raw mix of emotions in each character in A View from the Bridge, so the same mix of opinions of the characters is difficult to achieve. To conclude, while there are similarities and differences between the development of tragedy in both Macbeth and A View from a Bridge, Macbeth gives a much fuller and complex development of tragedy. It has so many elements in its plot and unfortunates in the sequence of events that lead to the end that it is difficult to fully explore its development of tragedy in comparison with such a short book.

Ajuste de estatus Si el cà ³nyuge extranjero para el que el residente permanente ha solicitado la green card està ¡ en EE.UU. legalmente se inicia el ajuste de estatus. La planilla a llenar es la I-485. El costo actual es de $1.225 e incluye el costo del servicio para los datos biomà ©tricos, la peticià ³n de permiso de trabajo y el permiso para viajar fuera de los Estados Unidos, conocido como advance parole. Ademà ¡s, deberà ¡ documentacià ³n que pruebe que el residente que patrocina tiene recursos suficientes para patrocinar. En este punto, importantes cambios entran en vigor con fecha 15 de octubre de 2019, a partir de la cual las solicitudes podrà ¡n negarse si el oficial migratorio considera que el migrante ha sido o puede ser en el futuro una carga pà ºblica. Tambià ©n serà ¡ necesario acudir a un mà ©dico autorizado por las autoridades migratorias para realizar un examen mà ©dico. Trà ¡mite consular Si el cà ³nyuge extranjero està ¡ fuera de Estados Unidos se inicia el procedimiento consular. En esta fase la iniciativa la lleva siempre las autoridades de Inmigracià ³n, primero el Centro Nacional de Visas y luego el consulado. Responder siempre en el plazo  que dicen y enviar toda la documentacià ³n. En general, estos son los pasos: El NVC se comunicarà ¡ con el residente que pide los papeles para su cà ³nyuge y, sucesivamente, enviarà ¡ y solicitarà ¡ informacià ³n, comenzando con factura para pagar por el affidavà ­t of support.  La cuota es de $120. Tras el pago pago, enviarà ¡Ã‚  para llenar el  affidavit. Este documento es esencial.  Estas son las posibilidades: I-864EZ, cuando se tienen  ingresos por encima de la là ­nea de la pobreza sin necesidad de recurrir a patrimonio  ni a co-patrocinadores.I-864, cuando necesita  ingresos y patrimonio (assets) o un  co-patrocinador que no reside fuera de la casa de familiar (por ejemplo, un amigo, o un hermano).I-864A, debe presentarse conjuntamente con el I-864 cuando se necesita el apoyo econà ³mico de una persona que vive en el mismo hogar familiar que el solicitante.I-864W, cuando  no es necesario presentar el affidavit of support porque los esposos llevan muchos aà ±os de casados. El NVC tambià ©n se comunicarà ¡ con el migrante para el que se pide la green card, enviando, en primer lugar, el formulario DS-261.   Despuà ©s de que el NVC recibe el pago, envà ­a la factura  de la tarifa de la visa de inmigrante, que en la actualidad y para esta categorà ­a es de $325. Despuà ©s de pagar esa cuota, se llenan las planillas del  DS-260, Parte I  parte II. Finalmente, tendrà ¡ lugar el examen mà ©dico en el lugar donde se seà ±ale, se cerrarà ¡ la cita para la toma de datos biomà ©tricos, incluida la de huellas digitales. Quà © documentos llevar a la entrevista en el consulado Se cierra la cita para la entrevista en el consulado. En la citacià ³n se  informarà ¡ de quà © hay que llevar. Seguir al pie de la letra las instrucciones. Pedirà ¡n, como mà ­nimo: Documentos originales que sirven de prueba de todos lo que se dijo en el  affidavit of supportResultados del examen mà ©dico, que han de estar en un sobre sin abrirCertificado de nacimiento (original y una fotocopia)Certificado de matrimonio (original y una fotocopia)Certificado de divorcio, nulidad o viudedad, si se estuvo previamente casado  (original y fotocopia)Pasaporte và ¡lidoLa carta del USCIS en la que se aprueba la peticià ³n del formulario I-130 (Form I-797)Dos fotografà ­as a color y muy recientes  tipo pasaporteCertificados policiales de todos los paà ­ses en los que se ha vivido, si dichos paà ­ses los dan. Y si los hay, rà ©cords militares (por ejemplo, si se sirvià ³ en el Ejà ©rcito), de condenas, de haber pasado tiempo en prisià ³n, de cortes.Documentos que sirven para acreditar que el matrimonio es verdadero. Despuà ©s de la entrevista El oficial consular puede rechazar la visa para la green card o aprobarla. Tener presente que es una visa, no es la residencia permanente  per se. Es una visa y se entrega un sobre que no se puede abrir. Sà ³lo puede hacerlo el inspector de Inmigracià ³n al llegar a un puerto, aeropuerto o frontera terrestre de los Estados Unidos. Se tienen seis meses para entrar en Estados Unidos.  Y una vez que se ingresa el inspector sella el pasaporte con una tarjeta de residencia verdadera. Y en unos meses llegarà ¡ por correo la de plà ¡stico. 3 tips en la peticià ³n de green card por familia En cualquier momento durante la tramitacià ³n el USCIS puede solicitar mà ¡s informacià ³n o documentacià ³n mediante una carta que se conoce como NTA. Debe responderse siempre dentro de plazo. Para evitar perder notificaciones por parte de las autoridades migratorias es obligatorio notificar siempre las mudanzas. Finalmente, la green card puede negarse por mà ¡s de 40 causas de inadmisibilidad. En algunos casos, serà ¡ posible pedir una waiver, tambià ©n conocido como perdà ³n o permiso, para arreglar el problema y asà ­, obtener la tarjeta de residencia permanente.
